The only issue with the login being associated with your phone number is that, if you move to a new phone number, you will have to decide between setting up a new account (and losing all chat history, etc.) or backing up and transferring all of this data to a new phone number - which can take a while if you have used the app a lot! Plus, WhatsApp draws your contacts straight from your phone, so you can easily view who is also on the app and therefore who you can message via WhatsApp. You’ll then receive an SMS text with a verification code to re-enter into WhatsApp and - voila!
